three days in

Well, I am now officially three days into the Insanity Max 30 program.  I am feeling really good about my workouts and nutrition - although I am still working on trying to limit the amount of sugar I consume (specifically sugar in fruit).  I've been good at limiting unnecessary/unhealthy carbohydrates and eating adequate protein.  I've also been doing a Shakeology shake each day... which I can honestly say I am really enjoying and do feel is making a difference.  I really look forward to the shake each day, I notice I crave it and it does seem to be helping with my energy and sugar cravings.

As for the workouts... whoo wheeee!!!  They are great.  Yesterday I completed Tabata and I also did a long walk with my family.  Today I did Sweat Intervals (and was completely soaked after), did the Ab Max workout and did a long walk.  I can say that I am feeling it... although not so much that I can't walk.  Today was the first day I was able to complete a few of the exercises non-modified, not for the entire time, but here and there.  It will be a journey and process.  I am anxious to see how I progress over the next few weeks and hopeful that my next progress check (with photos and measurements, etc) shows improvement and serves as motivation.  I'm sure that improvement is happening because I can tell in my pajama pants (which I happen to spend a considerable about of time in while I am on maternity leave).  The workouts have really helped my mental outlook also.  They have however, left me very tired by about 5:30.  I know my body will continue to adjust, right now I just take it for the fact that I am working my body.

I am hoping to maintain this balance because I notice how much healthier I am mentally when I am eating better and working out.  I know I need to be patient to see the physical progress as well and know it will come with consistency.  I already feel better in my skin.  I am anxious to see how much better I will feel even a month from now when we go on vacation!

Here we go...

Today marked the first official day of the new challenge I started (Insanity Max 30).  I have tried a couple of the wrkts late last week so I had a small taste of what was coming but today marked the first official day.  The program consists of 30 minute workouts 6 days/wk.  No equipment necessary, just your body weight.  Lot of plyometric type moves - I have been doing the entire workouts modified because I am 1.) out of shape 2.) overweight.  These modified workouts are still amazingly difficult and leave me feeling "workout satisfied" after them.  Today we did the Cardio Challenge workout, I can already tell the improvements I've made in the couple of weeks I've started working out.

I did notice that I am feeling pretty tired right about now.  I am guessing that much of that has to do with the fact that I am also watching my food intake and trying to cut down on sugar.  I think feeling tired is my body adjusting to the new style of eating and also trying to find a good equilibrium to settle into where I don't feel super tired/hungry but also don't overeat.  It will take some adjusting to.  I am curious to see how a full week of workouts will feel, how my body will adjust, etc.

In addition to this new challenge I learned of some things that have been going on at work, things that could ultimately impact me and my workload.  I am not going to go into details but what I will say is that I recognize this is a good time to continue to test my faith and commitment to my family and my health.  Something that I will need to maintain a focus on as I return to work (which isn't for several more weeks but I really need to be able to have good boundaries before going back).

More to come on all of this... hoping to get a good nights rest as I am feeling like I need it!  Hopefully Harper agrees that a good nights rest is a good idea :)

My baby put me on a diet.

What a weird title for a post that came out of no where.  Yes, I know... I've been gone for a long while.  BUT - I am back now, at least temporarily.  I am coming back to my blog because it sort of represents a place where an interesting journey began for me.  One where I documented a mental break through in physical achievement I had not experienced yet.  And although this was years ago, I find that it is just the reminder and motivation I need to begin documenting my journey yet again.

So, a lot has happened over a couple of years.  I won't bore this post with the details but I'd say the notable change worth mentioning is that I had a baby.  Yep, a baby. One of those miniature versions of yourself that sends you to the brink of exhaustion like you've never experienced.  Granted, this was a welcome addition (actually a begged for addition) and we are loving life with our new little girl, Harper (who is snuggled into my chest as I type this).  At just over two months I am finally feeling as if I have emerged from the fog of the newborn black hole that you can not even begin to understand until you've experienced it.  SO.MUCH.RESPECT.FOR.MOTHERS.  Holy moly is raising a baby a test of your willpower, patience, etc.  I now understand what all new mothers mean when they say "it's a lot of work".  I also know what they mean when they say "but its totally worth it and it's the best thing in the world to be a mom".

You may be reading this and wondering why I have arrived back on this blog and what I will be writing about now.  Well, I need an outlet.  I've been off work for two months and have another two to go.  I want to capture my thoughts and journey somewhere.  Naturally, this is a good place for me.  In addition, I am venturing on a new wellbeing journey and think it is exciting to continue my story from the same place I began to document it.  I am not sure if anyone will read this and that's ok.  I realize that most likely no one cares about my trials and tribulations like I do but I need this for me.  I'd like to document my new journey as a mother but also my new journey adjusting to my new body and regaining some of what was lost through pregnancy (actually, I shouldn't try and fool you... much of it was lost long before pregnancy, for a plethora of reasons... of which will most likely become intertwined in future posts).

For this first official post I'd like to declare that my baby put me on a diet.  What the heck does that even mean you ask?  Well, aside from the obvious that most all new moms feel (the need to loose the baby weight) I've found that breastfeeding a baby can result in mom going on a diet herself.  At least, I would assume this to be true of any mother who wants the best for her baby after finding out the baby's comfort could be improved through nutritional shifts by the mother.  I've learned that Harper is sensitive to some foods I eat, most notably dairy.  So, for starters... this boob buffet is going dairy free.  Honestly, she's doing both of us a favor by forcing this on us.  Mom needs to learn to cut down on the cheese and yogurt, etc.  She's also forced mom to pay much closer attention to the quality of foods consumed.  These behaviors presumably will lead to improved health and the sibling of improved health, better physique.  That's my round about way of declaring that I need to loose weight.  My nutritional habits will be part of this journey, first starting with removal of dairy, unnecessary sugars and increasing the amount of healthy protein and vegetables consumed.  Let me be clear here though... removing sugars from my diet will leave me sucking my thumb curled up in a ball crying on the floor in the corner.  I love me some sweet treats, and yet I know and understand that sugar is my enemy.  This is true for a number of reasons but one of the biggest is because I was diagnosed with PCOS a little over a year ago (more on that later).

Secondary to food, I'd like to declare that I am re-instating physical activity.  Partly, for the benefits of weight loss (a girl don't need to deny this being a big motivation) but also because it feels good to move my body again - well sorta.  Right now it feels a bit more like a hippo trudging through concrete but I know it will feel better again soon.  I also need to regain a regular physical activity schedule as a stress outlet.  If there is one thing I know intimately about myself it is that I am a much happier/productive/loving person if I am working out regularly.  This will be critical as I prepare to go back to work, which can be very high stress most days (don't get me wrong, I am blessed to have made an amazing career shift in the past couple of years but along that way I've lost a bit of myself and my regular schedule of working out).  Can I also mention that working out is something I recognize will help me be a better mother?  I recognize that my health and happiness are more critical now more than ever for the future of my daughter.  Amazing, how that transformation can take place in your mind nearly overnight.  So, don't be hatin' on my assuming this is some New Years resolution.  Timing may be suspect but this is more of a New Life resolution, for my new life as a mother and to accommodate the things I have learned to be true of my needs so that I can ensure that I am a great mother for years to come.

So, where does this leave me now?  You want details of what I am going to do about this?  I decided to take "before" photos... if I muster up the courage I will post them but not just yet.  In addition, I have weighed myself and taken circumference measurements.   Documenting all of this is critical for me to find ways to capture success.  I have slowly been modifying my diet over the past few weeks and will continue to do that in the coming weeks.  Much will be discussed related to dietary habits/recipes, etc.  I am also going to be completing the new Insanity Max 30 workout program, which is 60 days long.  Perfect timing to be just wrapping up when I return to work.  That hell inflicted journey starts Monday.  I've already tried a few of the workout DVDs and have done a few other workouts with my friend Emily (yep, the same gal I spoke of years ago).  She's a rockstar friend, true support system and amazing motivation (she herself has battled PCOS and looks and feels better than ever after two kids).  The initiation into working out has been good - for once in my life I've been easing my way into something.  Totally not my style, however, I know I need to be careful and want to ensure sustainability.  These workouts are the one thing I feel I can do completely for myself and I don't want to jeoporadize that joy.  Don't get me wrong though, even the "easing into" I've done has left me sore.  In fact, I sit here typing this with a tore up booty from a class that I took from Emily earlier this morning.  My whole body has been sore for a little over a week and I know that ain't going away considering I'm doing the entire DVD completely modified - thus, I've got lots of capacity to continue adapting to.

So there you have it... the rest of the details will be forthcoming in future posts and historical details will be intertwined in those posts as well.  I don't want to bore you with all that here and now and besides my carpel tunnel is flaring up and I don't feel like typing much more at this point.  Signing off... until next time.

Overcoming the fear...

If you have looked at my blog posts over the past years (which have become much more sparse - lol) you would know that nearly two years ago I suffered a major bicycle accident.  Aside from the physical injuries, which were significant, I had MAJOR psychological issues after the accident.  Although the psychological ramifications didn't really surface fully until about a year after the accident, I assume this was because the first year I was preoccupied with healing physically.  I had reoccurring fears and thoughts of the accident happening again or turning out differently (meaning, leaving me off worse than I was or currently am).  These thoughts started to invade my life, all hours of the day - and I mean ALL hours.  I was losing sleep, up all night with irrational anxiety and fear.  I finally sought help.  My doctor diagnosed me with PTSD.  Yep, shocker.  I thought to myself that how could I have PTSD?  I mean, that's so serious.  That's something I think is more deserving for people who have been through much more serious situations than I.  I think of war zones and all of the amazing people who serve our country so we can have the freedoms we have  (if you are reading this and have or currently are serving our country... THANK YOU by the way).  I underwent counseling and was treated with anti-anxiety meds.  Long story short, I am beyond that now.  I am off meds and although I still have fearful thoughts at times I also have hopeful thoughts and I am able to move beyond any anxiety that surfaces.  All of this is to say that where I am today is much different than where I was 6-12 months ago.

Through this journey I still haven't really conquered the fear of riding my bike.  Yes, I took it out for a ride on a local paved trail about a year ago but I haven't taken it for a ride on the road and especially haven't taken any rides downhill.  I have verbalized how I wanted to conquer the fear and I wanted to take my bike out but never had.  I now realize, I just wasn't ready and by giving myself the ok to not do it was where I needed to be.  Well, today marked the day I was ready.  I had been thinking about it for weeks now, visualizing me riding and building up my confidence.  I don't want to ride my bike alone and honestly I just can't (yet).  So, I really wanted to do this with someone who I feel would be supportive of me.  Of course, my husband is a perfect fit for this need.  We rode our bikes to the gym today.  From our house to the gym.  One small detail I should share is that we live on top of a hill - there's no getting around it, we have to go downhill to get out of our neighborhood.  Of course, that also means we have to go uphill to get home.  These are fairly high grade hills, so this is serious stuff!  The hubs had gotten our bikes ready, tires pumped, etc.  My heart was racing as we left the house.  I warned my husband - I may need to stop and I HAVE to go slow downhill, I don't want to feel the feeling of my bike getting out of control again like the last feelings I remember before my wreck.  We took it easy down the hill.  There were a few times where I felt a little unstable.  There were moments my palms were sweaty.  There were moments I wanted to turn around and go back home,  Through all of that I decided that I really needed to push through - I could take breaks.  I could go as slow as I wanted but I needed to keep going.  After the first couple of hills out of the neighborhood I started to feel a little more confident.  The last hill I went much faster than I had been going and I heard my husband cheering behind me, "you're back!"  That made me feel good.

On the way back home, I wasn't scared for the same reasons.  I wasn't thinking about wrecking again on my bike.  I was actually more concerned with being able to make it back up the hills!  Some of these hills are quite steep and I am not in cycling shape (remember - I have only been working out again for about a week consistently!).  Well, I made it.  I'm not going to lie though it was tough.  My lungs were on fire, my quads were throbbing and I was sweating like I was in a sauna.  You probably could have pushed me over with a feather at some points I was riding so slow!  But I made it home and I feel accomplished.  It may seem small to some people but to me it was truly a milestone.  It's amazing to me that I have done so many things that require such dedication and determination... I mean, Ironman isn't for the faint of heart and yet today I was almost starting back over.  Physically and mentally, I felt like a beginner but that's ok.  I am ok with that feeling, in fact, in some ways I am truly embracing it.  Because I am on a journey for improvement and I am grateful I can be in the moment and enjoy these moments.  I am humble to how quickly things can change, good or bad.

I have active friends who have never suffered an accident like the one I did.  Some of them are empathetic about how difficult of a mental journey, and sometimes still physical journey it has been for me.  Others are completely ignorant and naive and can't relate because for whatever reason they don't realize it could happen to them so easily.  In some ways these certain friends have portrayed themselves as self-centered.  To the friends who have been empathetic, supportive and authentic to me - THANK YOU.  You all should know who you are, if I have talked to you about the fears I have and how I have felt about all of this over the past two years... you are one of these great friends that I am saying thank you to.  You were part of this journey for me to get to where I was and am today.

It has been a variety of emotions but today I am at a place where I continually try to be grateful for all I have and I am humble to the fears I still have from the experiences of my life.

Green theme

I am not going to even start by explaining why so much time has passed between my last post and this one (yes, again... another long gap of time).  Nor am I going to tell you about all of the food photos I have taken during my hiatus with every intention to post and share (those will eventually make it onto my blog, eventually).  No.  I am not going to do either of those things.  I am just going to start by telling you about today and even a little of yesterday.

I have had a hankering for some green foods lately... perhaps the old bod is tired of refined carbohydrates and sugar.  Perhaps, for the first time in a long time I actually want to eat the things I should be eating (and should have been eating for while now).  Honestly, I don't really care what is causing this.  I running with it, running with my green theme!  So, what does "green theme" mean exactly?  Well, it means that I am incorporating LOTS of green foods into my diet.  If you think about it most all of the green foods I think about are all very good for you (aside from decomposing foods that are bacteria houses, aka moldy).  I have lots of green things in the kitchen right now, the fruits of my labor after a trip to the grocery store.  What's available for my culinary pleasure you ask?  Well, here are a few of the items;

  • Zucchini
  • Avocado
  • Green Peppers
  • Brussell sprouts
  • Green onions
  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Snap Peas
  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
They all sounded good so they made the trip from my cart to my kitchen!

What else is new?  Well, workouts are new.  I worked out yesterday and today.  Felt great, a little sore tonight but it's an indication I worked hard :)  Here is what my "workout weekend" comprised of (don't mind the random reps/sets or names for the exercises on some of these);

SAT
-Stepmill intervals (20 mins)
-Plie bar squats (3 x12)
-Bench push ups (3 x 8)
-Narrow body weight squats while holding 5lb dumbbells in both hands above head (3 x 12)
-Hamstring ball roll ins (2 x 15)
-Bridge (2 x 30 seconds)

SUN
-Treadmill intervals (6 mins warm up, 24 mins HIIT (8 rounds))
-Side lunge/woodchop shoulder press (3 x 15 each side)
-Partial turkish get ups (3 x 8 each side)
-Walking lunge with bicep curl and shoulder press (3 x 12 each leg)
-Mountain climbers and cross climbers (2 x 24)
-V-knees ups (2 x 20)

Now... on to make sure my workout weekend doesn't leave me as only a weekend warrior but rather a weeklong warrior...

Jump shots and sweet potato pucks

It's still all good in the hood with me... I just got done with a workout session (at home with my kettlebells, spin bike and elliptical) - but hey, a sweat session is a sweat session!  Had an early morning workout tues at the gym, EARLY bird.  I felt tired, didn't want to get outta bed.  It was rainy.  I was cozy.  However, I did it - and felt great afterwards (especially coming home from work and feeling like I had a free pass to veg out all evening :)).  A side note to all of this... my little girls only workout group is reassembling and growing!  I swear - someday I will do this for a living (again).

I recently started playing basketball again.  Great workout and a lot of fun.  Playing sunday nights with a group of gals, fun to have the energy to do these things in my life still.  I LOVE feeling empowered again.  Feeling so empowered that I plan on completing my first triathlon since Ironman 2011.  That's significant.  I plan on sharing the journey back to training here, on this silly little blog that serves as my keyboard outlet.

What else is exciting....?  The hubs and I are headed on vacay in May.  Hawaii, yes, AGAIN.  For the past five years we have done an annual Hawaii trip.  Generally at this time of the year I would be feeling overwhelmed, like I needed to be going balls to the wall to get ready for the beach.  This time I don't feel the same pressure.  I know I need to loose a few lbs but I'm just going at my pace.  Not putting too much pressure on myself and enjoying the journey.  It's a feeling I haven't felt in a long time, freedom, balance, and clarity.

Lastly, what is with the "sweet potato pucks" in the title?  Well, something that has become somewhat of a new obsession for me.  Trader Joes frozen sweet potatoes.

These can be found in the freezer section at trader joes.   Inside the bag you find little "sweet potatoe pucks".  One serving is 5 pucks.  You just heat in microwave for one min or so (or leave out to thaw) and there you have it!  roasted, mashed sweet potatoes.  Nothing else added and only 80 calories per serving.  I freaking love these little suckers.

Who put the cheese in cheesecake?!?!?

As promised I am still here... blogging (albiet somewhat periodically) but I am still here.  Update on the past week - AWESOME week.  I had many great workouts, a couple that left hurtin for a few days but that's all good.  Sign of accomplishment, work well done.  One workout in particular (Wed evening) I did with a friend of mine who loves the same type of workouts I do.  I brought the "pain" all the well knowing what we were getting ourselves into... and yet not an ounce of sanity set in as I crafted the torturous 1hour together.  Here's how the workout went down;

25 minutes HIIT Cardio

Strength Circuit (three rounds of each pairing of exercises, no rest... quick quick quick);

-Jump Lunges (30)
-Bench Step Ups with DBs (30)

repeat three times... next set;

-Negative Pullups (8... insert devil face here)
-Pushups on Med ball (12)

repeat... you guessed it three times... next set;

-Pikes on ExerBall (25)
-Back Ext on ExerBall (25)

Generally I would have done another set of exercises, but really this was plenty for a fat ass gal who is reclaiming her physique.

All in all - had a great week.  Four solid workout days and some progress to show for it in the waistline.  LOVE that :)

Lastly, I want to share a new healthy dessert recipe I concocted/tried this evening.  High protein, low sugar cheesecake.

Here are the basics;

3/4 cup lowfat cottage cheese
1 TBSP sugar free jello pudding (I used white choc flavor)
3 (or so) TBSPs unsweetened almond milk
1/3 scoop vanilla protein
sprinkle of stevia

Place all in heavenly blender - aka - Vitamix and blend till smooth.  Makes two servings, place in two small bowls to chill in fridge for 30mins.  Top with fresh strawberries.  Divine.  Lovely.  Delish.  YUM.

R.I.P.P.E.D. and running!

Greetings loved ones!  Well I have much to update you on.  First, I have started running again.  Hellz bellz!  I ran three times last week.  Only 2 miles or so each time... but that's a great start considering I haven't been running regularly in a. very. long. time.  The runs have felt great, I actually have energy when I come home from work and have run twice after work in the evening.  My body hasn't been hurting or achy like it usually is after work.  While i have been running at a much slower pace than I normally would (think snail pace... firing on two cylinders), I have still been out in the open air with my hair flowing in the wind (well, actually I have been wearing a beanie but you get the idea here).

Secondly, I recently tried a new class called R.I.P.P.E.D.  It's the next fitness craze.  While I liked it, I'm just not sure the gargantuan class is for me (yes, there were a lot of people there).  The format was good but I think I'd like to stick with my own little strength training routines - which I have actually been doing again!!!!  I have made good use of my TRX, kettlebells, dumbbells, elliptical, spin bike, exerball and yoga mat that I have in my basement workout area.  I haven't been going balls to the wall on the weights, only 1-2 sets of 8-10 different exercises, but I have been just sore enough to know that I am making improvements.  My mid-back has been sore.  Gotta be careful there with the vertebrae issues I have, working on getting those babies nice and strong!  Whoot whoot!

As far as nutrition... well the amazing thing is that since I have been off my anxiety meds (not sure if I mentioned this before but there ya go) I have been so much better about my food intake, both type of food and amount.  I feel like ME again.  I will blog more about food later and some of my new fav recipes like Kale salad - yummer!  (see preview pic above - grilled chicken breast with szechwan seasoning, grilled peppers and kale salad)

walking on stilts

well... its official.  remember that workout i had planned?  well, it came and went.  meaning - i did it... and then kinda regretted it!  holy moly!  i was sooooo sore.  my legs hurt so bad i spent three solid days hobbling around.  picture a woman who is 9 months pregnant walking on stilts.  no really... you know the "pregnant lean back" thats how i managed to get down stairs.  no, im not pregnant thats just the visual im giving.  it sucked.  but was humbling.
on other fronts, my nutrition has been good.  i feel much more in control.  one great thing is that my new co-workers and i created some healthy snack baskets.  we added fresh fruit, nuts, dried berries, healthy granola bars, teas, etc. so that we are surrounded by yummy healthy things when we want a snack.  its seriously great.  we also have access to a great cafeteria if i forget my lunch.  basically there is really no excuse to turn into a cookie monster at 3pm.  my cravings and feelings of exhaustion have also gone away.  i am happy to announce that i have been off my anxiety meds for 5 solid days.  i went through a weaning off phase and feel great.  i cant believe how stressed and buried i was.  i finally feel "normal" again.  im really looking forward to my journey ahead.  more to come...

ps (i am typing this on my tablet, so pardon the puncutations and misspellings)

It's time to ressurect this bizzo

Holy moly.  It has been a very. long. time!  I've decided that I am ready to ressurect this blog.  I am currently going through what some might categorize as a major life change as I am changing jobs.  Last week was week number 1.  It was great.  This is a much needed transition for my sanity and life balance.  It has been refreshing.  Along with all of the changes has come mental clarity, full nights of sleep, no headaches, waking up feeling energized, no teeth grinding at night, etc.  Sound like I feel less stressed?  Well, that is because I am.  Hallelujah.

Although the week started out as a sort of emotional one (found myself feeling guilty and sad that I had "left" a team that I cared so much about) I quickly settled into my new position and realized how much better this will be for me in the long run.  Plus relationships can be maintained!

I'm not going to spend this whole post typing out what has happened since I was last on here... those updates will come in upcoming posts as I start to post again.  The one major thing is that the hubs and I have been trying to start a family - not going to go into details just yet but we have been unsuccessful.  With this job transition we have decided to wait a few months and plan a sunny get away first.  I NEED to get back into shape.  I feel like a little dumpling piglet hefer roly poly rhino waddling around.
I have started working out again this week, actually easing myself into it.  Can you believe that... me "easing myself" into anything?!?!  I have a trip planned to workout at the Y today and am feeling good about things.  However, I am planning a TABATA training... which might leave my body severely sore by morning.  I'm hoping I will still be able to waddle into work in the morn.  As a side note, I am also weaning myself off of anti-anxiety meds that I have been on for the past 4 months or so.  I think having to go on meds for anxiety was a major sign that I needed to make some sort of change and thus am on that journey now.

So.... there you have it ~ updates on training, food and other coming soon...

Going back to my roots

After a fairly long hiatus, I'm back. Nothing all that exciting to share about (although I do have something in the works I will eventually share about). This past week left me completely drained, exhausted, achy, lethargic, etc. I'm not sure what it was but it was one of those weeks... well, maybe I should say one of those couple/few weeks. After a good weekend of rest and getting food back on track I am glad to say I am feeling better. I was able to get back to running also, I did a short run yesterday (~30mins). I told a friend of mine it wasn't exactly a 'graceful' run but I was glad to say I got out and did it. Especially because the weather was crap yesterday. It's amazing how quickly your workouts can feel so hard after some time away. I seriously felt like a hippo escaping from captivity thudding down the street. My ankles felt like cheap toothpicks about to snap in half. It's best to face these realizations head on, I need to be more consistent. A little weight loss wouldn't hurt either.

Now onto food. I am going back to my roots. I really enjoy what I would call "healthy hippie food". This is how I used to eat all the time, until I moved to SpoCompton. I was a vegetarian for a while, and spent the other majority of my time as a 'flexitarian' eating primarily vegetarian but occasionally including fish and chicken. I'm not going back to vegetarian, at least not now anyway but I am in need of eating more plant based foods. So I made several salads that I could munch on over the next several days. Below is a sampler plate of the items. I have more of each of these in the fridge for quick eats this week.

OMG, my mouth is watering just looking at this picture. This is the type of stuff you see at your co-op delis, for fancy pants grab and go places in town. This is the type of eating I absolutely LOVE but sometimes get too lazy to prepare. So what is all of that stuff?! Well, allow me to explain... (listed from the bottom left, moving clockwise)

1. Golden beet salad with roasted walnuts and Gorgonzola (my favorite item on the plate)
2. Orzo salad with Mediterranean olives, fresh cherry tomatoes, feta and fig balsamic vinegar
3. Organic bamboo pearl rice with mung bean sprouts, green cabbage and sauteed baby bella mushrooms (sprayed with Liquid Aminos... taste like soy sauce... sooooo good)
4. Tri-color quinoa with cucumber, red pepper, red onion, carrots, avocado and honey ginger dressing
5. Red and green cabbage slaw with shredded carrots, celery seed apple cider vinaigrette

Whew... that was a mouthful (no pun intended). I have more where this came from this week. A chickpea salad and a navy bean salad too. I am cooking the beans in the crockpot currently. I'll post the picks when completed!

Adrenal fatigue and other ramblings

I have been convinced that I am dealing with adrenal fatigue these days. Adrenal fatigue is actually quite common with Americans because of 1) our stressful lives 2) the crap we eat 3) we are constantly overstimulated and over medicated. It can present itself in a variety of ways. I think that perhaps I may have come back to work too soon from the accident and haven't had enough time to reduce the stress that has been in my life the last 7 or so months. I have decided to take an adrenal support supplement. Below is the supplement I chose. I have just started this supplement in the last 4 days, and already I seem to feel some difference. I will continue to take it and share my experience with it. I have posted the nutritional info below, for those of you who are all worked up reading this and want to know what is in it.

Highway to the veggie zone

Well, I have to first start out my post by saying that I am in serious need of some motivation. Not only for workouts but for eating too. I have been good off and on but I just don't feel energized. I am trying Operation Eat Green Veggies but I'm not sure I can say I have been successful at this point. Before I get into some food sharing I thought I'd share this picture I took the other day from our living room window, it was such a beautiful morning - I couldn't resist snapping a shot. My camera crapped out so I didn't even get to take the other view shot which was even better.

Although the eating has been touch and go like a small cessna, I did have a bomba$$ dinner the other night (yes, I did just type bomba$$ like its 1998 again). I made some edamame, which I had been burnt out on for quite some time. I have really been avoiding soy for the past couple of years because I don't think most sources are all that good for you. I was sure to by non-GMO edamame, that made me feel better. I have a new way of cooking my edamame too! I steam it as you usually would and then I put it in a hot pan with a touch of toasted sesame oil and sautee it. After that I add sea salt and sesame seed - yum!

This was accompanied by one of my new favorite salad combos... it has roasted chickpeas, dried apricots/apricot preserves and gorgonzola cheese. I drizzle the salad in a homemade dressing, creamy cumin dressing. Soooooo goooooddddd!

PS Don't ask me why the text looks so weird in the middle of this post... I can't figure out how to undo whatever it is that I did to make it that way.

E is for energy

Why is it that lack of energy seems to be perpetual? That once your energy starts slipping, you rest and become even more tired? This describes my past week. Going into the week I had high hopes and expectations for myself, but by Tuesday my week had gone to shit. I did work out all days but Thursday and Friday but I seemed to have this concrete tired feeling. The kind of feeling that also seems to make you eat as if you were (alcohol) "buzzed"... in a way that you convince yourself it's time to let loose or that you deserve 'it' (it meaning all those little treats you shouldn't be eating). I spent the evenings around my home rummaging through the kitchen like a bear raiding a campsite. As you predicted it, I was eating sweets (and pretty much everything in between). I got my "fix" early in the week with an European candy bar and turned into a junkie the rest of the week. On a sugar bender, knowing it was wrong but giving in. Now... don't get me wrong... I wasn't completely bad, I did have some good complete meals but certainly didn't eat as clean as I'd have hoped. Ironically, as I type this my hubby just shouted, "you know what sounds good?A Baskin Robbins cake!" Um, ya! It freakin does sound good but I'm already ridin this sugar wave at its peak and I shouldn't do it... my pancreas is screaming at me, exhausted from basically doing an ultramarathon by pumping out insulin into my bloodstream to suck up all of the glucose I keep dumping into it.
I think it is because of this that my body feels like a giant sandbag and I have been struggling to find energy to propel myself back into that hardcore crazy biotch that tears it up in the gym. Instead I find myself wanting to do the elliptical for 20 mins and some light stretching (no offense to those of you reading who enjoy this kind of workout, there is nothing wrong with that... but for me it just isn't my style). Any way, I'm planning on refocusing this week and have decided I would like to start distance running again. I feel at my best when I am running regularly. It's freeing to feel the wind in your hair and ground under your feet... and just because I'm not as fast as I was at one point doesn't mean I shouldn't go out and run. I won't get any faster by sitting on my ass, at least I don't think they've made a pill for that yet. :)

It doesn't get easier...

Hi ya'll!

Sorry for the hiatus... some Birthday Cake Oreos held me hostage for the past few days (and may have been to blame for a stomach bug that developed Sunday and lasted into Monday). Funny thing is I don't even like Oreos! With this little episode I feel like doing this to my fridge;

Yep, been one of those weekends I guess. I haven't done horribly, I just haven't been as good as I can. I had a good workout this evening, although it felt HARD. Just trying to move forward one day at a time. Looking for some motivation and hoping this will help me (and anyone else who is reading and needs it)

what the heck?!?!

Well, I was glad to say that last week I had several amazing workouts. This week so far is off to a rough start. I have been habitually sore from workouts because by the time a muscle group recovers I hit is again and I'm sore again. This may sound like a good thing, but it really isn't because of impressive workouts. It has more to do with being a weakling... sometimes I feel like a baby bird walking around my house squabbling and wobbly because I'm sore. It is different than it was before, clearly I haven't made my way there yet. My clothes are fitting somewhat differently but the scale didn't give me much encouragement (remind me I need to stay off of that thing!). I have just under 13 weeks until we leave for Hawaii, plenty of time to see results as long as I am consistent.
I have to admit though, I felt a bit discouraged today. I also wore nylons to work today. Why is it that nylons can make you feel like crap instantly? They squeeze things around into weird places and I felt like the top of the nylons squeezed my stomach down and all of the sudden I felt like I looked like I was four months pregnant. Sucks to feel like the Michelin man.
Oh well, I just keep reminding myself to keep consistent and eventually my body will get the hint. For some reason I swear that once you turn 30 your body just acts differently - I don't like it but I am stubborn enough to take the control back.

In it for the long haul

I spent a few hours today cooking for the week. It's been a long time since I have done this and I don't believe I have done it since living in my new house yet. I really loved the kitchen counter space, more so than my old house. I was able to spread out and get dirty (this is a fairly literal statement after all the cooking was done). What is on the menu for this week? Well, lots of yummy stuff. All healthy (or "healfy" as I sometimes say)... results are about consistency. Food is at least 70% of your results, so this is where much success can be gained.

Here are the items (the first two I actually made a few days ago but never uploaded pics)

(from earlier in the week)
Mahi mahi tacos with black beans, red cabbage and avocado on low-carb tortillas

(from earlier in the week)
Chicken salad with mixed greens, roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, mini heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, baby corn, carrots, avocado, red cabbage, goat cheese and balsamic vineagarette. Holy Yum.

Cinnamon Coconut Protein Bread
This came out so much better than I thought it would and dang it is delish! It has egg whites, coconut flower, vanilla protein, cinamon, stevia and almond milk in it.

Meyer Lemon Chicken

Roasted in a broth, white wine, rosemary, lemon garlic sauce
and served over brown rice mixed with red quinoa.

Grilled Kalbi Marinated Chicken

Kalbi is a Korean BBQ seasoning. This chicken will be cut and used on green salads.

Turkey Meatloaf Muffins

Served over fig balsamic carmelized onions and mushrooms.

Grilled Australian Ginger BBQ Chicken Breast

Served over roasted sweet potatoes.

(this is actually prepped in the crockpot and will be turned on in the morning so I come home to a warm meal - plus, the hubs has been craving chili)

HeartyTurkey Chili

Made with kidney beans, tomatoes and lentils in a chili-enchilada seasoning/sauce.

Wild Alaskan Salmon Salad
Made with garlic, fresh dill, pepper, mayo (just a touch) and deli mustard. Served with green bell peppers (to be used as the "transporters" :))

As you can see I am set for the week and I am looking forward to my meals this week!

Tools of the trade

Today is going to result in a couple of posts because I was too lazy this week to get on and upload some pics and write. I'd like to share a couple of "tools of the trade" when it comes to my life right now. In addition to my running shoes (which are the #1 key to my sanity) the items below are helping me along my journey.

First item: a new bikini. Don't get me wrong, I have PLENTY of bikinis but I bought another one for my upcoming Hawaii trip. Why is it that I feel
the need to buy new bikinis every time I go to Hawaii??!! Any way, this bikini is serving as total motivation. First of all,it is a tad tight but I couldn'tresist it because it is the most unique blueish purple color (the pic isn't doing it enough justice). In just a few short months I will be on the North Shore of Oahu and this bikini is coming with me along with it's other bikini siblings that live in my closet! Therefore, this is a reminder that the hard work will be worth it when I am laying on the beach sipping a Mai Tai, especially if I'm not mistaken for a beached sea animal. We will be traveling to Turtle Bay Resort and Spa... I can not wait! We go to Hawaii just about every year but this will be our first time visiting Oahu. yay :)

Next item: lemons. I have been adding these to my water like crazy lately. In this pic there are two types of lemons. On the left is a Meyer lemon (cross between an orange and a lemon) and on the right is a traditional lemon. I am particularly fond of the Meyer lemon. Either way, these lemons are helping flavor my water. In the past I used to add things like Crystal Light to my water when I wanted flavor. What I know feel is that artificially sweetened items are the gateway drug to sweet cravings. They are soooo much sweeter than sugar and I believe they lead to out of control sugar cravings. So, I am avoiding the artificial sweeteners pretty much altogether.

Last item(s): a plethora of food supplements. No, I do not use these all every day. And yes, I do have more but these I'd like to share because I think they are very important (at least to me right now). Here they are listed from left to right, top first. Ionic Fizz Magnesium, Amazing Meal, Green Superfood, Recoup (BCAA & Glutamine recovery drink), Barleans Omega Swirl, Raw Fiber, Warrior Food (the BEST vegan, non-toxic protein), Bee Pollen and Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer. To some people this might seem crazy, but honestly these items really do serve a purpose. In addition to these pictured here I also take multivitamins (when I remember and am not too lazy before I go to bed), Vitamin D3, Whey Proteins and sometimes Nitric Oxide.

There you have it... some of my "tools of the trade".

Honor thy body

This is sort of a self reflective post, it's not one of me making fun of myself like usual. I had to see my doctor three times this week to help get my recovery back on track and relieve some of the pain from the flare up of symptoms from the accident. I cried twice this week when meeting with her (no, this is not normal for me). The first day I cried was Monday. Right when my doctor came into the treatment room I cried like a small child who had been missing its mother. I cried again Friday when she asked how I was doing. Why did I cry twice this week? Well, it is because of the emotional journey I guess. I felt scared. Scared that I was going to be told I had to stop working out, scared that I would have to deal with pain like this for the rest of my life. I also said to my doctor on Friday that I felt fragile, something I hadn't ever felt before. Fragile is something that makes me feel weak.

My doctor said she appreciated it when I cried in front of her, she said that's part of the healing process. Feeling this type of vulnerability is important to the process of healing (these are her words, although I do agree I guess). She told me that these types of physical setbacks after the accident are normal, and they will be accompanied by mental and emotional journeys. She then asked me if I have realized how significant my accident and injuries really were. It's hard for me to answer this question. Although my doctors have continually told me how lucky I am I guess it is hard to acknowledge it when it is your own body and life and especially when you aren't used to feeling like you had a brush with death. She then said something that really resignated with me, she said "until you acknowledge and accept how serious your accident was you're going to have a hard time moving through these feelings and setbacks. You need to honor where your body is at and recognize you are making great progress and are much further along than you should be. You need to tell your body Thank You for saving you from being paralyzed or even worse, death. Don't be mad at your body because it has these setbacks and can't go 110%."

The conversation really hit me. She is completely right, I haven't accepted the seriousness of the accident. I haven't spent enough time thanking my body for making the progress it has so far. It is really a vulnerable feeling to open up and allow acceptance to enter your mind. So, perhaps this should have been a New Years resolution... honoring where I am at and not getting frustrated my the process of healing.

Burgerville

It was "one of those" weeks. All had been going well until Friday. Let me re-wind and take you to early in the week. I started the week off great, early bird workout Monday morning. Tuesday I couldn't workout early because I had to go to Seattle for work and my flight left EARLY. It was a fast paced business trip (as they usually are). My lunch was ordered for me, basically they ordered a variety of burgers and warm sandwiches. I quickly chose the black bean burger because it was the healthiest option that was presented (the fries on the other hand... um... well... those aren't exactly healthy but they were yummy). This started me on a journey to Burgerville. The lunch itself wasn't all that bad but when I got back home I was sttaaaarrrrrvvvviinngggg and thus I surrendered to a Jack n the Box on the way home. Dang it! I decided that although I found myself in Burgerville I was only passing through and didn't plan an extended stay.
The next morning I had a great workout, probably the most intense I've done since the accident and it felt good to be acting like a wild animal in the gym again. Thursday my body was speaking, or maybe I should say screaming at me. I was sore, but it was one of those accomplished sore feelings. Regardless, I needed a rest day. Here's where all went wrong. I woke up Friday and could not move my neck without excruciating pain. I was hurting bad. I tried to tough it out but just spent the weekend in major pain and back to popping pain pills like they are tic tacs. I got into to see my Dr. today, she is seriously a miracle worker. I'm still a bit stiff and sore, but so much better. I will be seeing her again Wed and Fri this week to get back on track. I do have to mention though that the pain did not keep me from visiting Burgerville once more Friday night (in the form of Five Guys) UGH! and we also had dinner at The Melting Pot (pure saturated fat in three courses of fondue - bad girl!).
I don't want to go into to many details as to what happened with my neck and back but basically I have been trying to do too much and told to take things a little easier. I am released to still be working out (just a little less aggressively). My doctor knows that exercise is like Prozac for me and understands how important it is that I keep my routine - again, she is a total god send!

This week is all about diet. I will be keeping a food journal, I may even share a day if something seems interesting enough. Here's to a great week ya'll!

About Me

My photo
I have been athletic ALL of my life, I think at this point it would be safe to say its in my DNA. I have played many competitive sports (volleyball, basketball, track), have played recreationally (soccer, softball) and have been working out since I was in 4th grade. I started lifting in 7th grade - yes, was even starting to learn the full on olympic lifts. I now enjoy running, hiking, skiing, hangin out at the lake and just being active. I have run a couple of marathons, and recently competed in my first figure show. I am not sure what the future holds for me with regards to my "exercise adventures" but I look forward to finding out...
